When I try to do things the 'easy' way, I'm always getting into trouble! Fpr instance, when trying to add a variable, I right-click on Form1 (Chap 14, p 839) and then click on "Add Variable". What happens is that Internet Explorer comes up (!) with an error message.

I have no idea why IE is invoked (it's not even my default browser), so I ended up adding things manually. BTW, I've upgraded to IE 8 ... could that be a problem?

Like you, I am unable to "Add Variable" as described on page 839. I eventually gave up and did it manually by peaking at the chapter 14 code downloads for guidance.

However I don't have the problem you have with IE8 popping up. I'm thinking my problems are because I'm using the express edition. You? For me, the option to Add / Add Variable is simply not available in the pop-up I get after right clicking on Form1.h in Class View.

Thanks for the quick reply. I, too, was using an Express edition (the price was right!) but wanted to learn how to play with MFC, too. So I bit the bullet and actually bought a copy of Visual Studio. No regrets, so far.

I bought the Standard Edition of Visual Studio from Amazon. If I recall correctly, the total was about $172 (USD).
