Default Why Does Mr. Horton Say To Disable Unicode?

On page 16 of the book, Mr. Horton states that to run the console programs in the book that Unicode should be disabled, and that failure to do so would cause the console programs in the book to fail to build.

However, I have not had any problems with my console programs compiling and running with Unicode enabled as the Character Set. Could this statement be an anachronism from an earlier edition of Visual Studio? If not, does anyone here have more specifics on this?
