Just trying to get started. Have installed JDK but when I run the Android SDK installer it tells me that the JDK is not there. I have tried three times now. The JDK installer appears to have worked -- on the last occasion it said it successfully uninstalled and then re-installed it. I have tried the JDK on its own and an SDK bundle which includes it.

What a i doing wrong?

I recently started developing android apps using a MacBook. The documentation didn't capture the different issues I was having. Anyway after a few hours of work, I got everything working ok.

Install the 32bit version of java and the JDK dude.

.... but I eventually sorted it out. To be honest I cannot remember exactly what I did differently, but I started again from scratch. I am now up and running and have my first app on the market. (A simple calculator called TrueCalc, which has the distinguishing feature that you can record your work and email what you did to yourself (or anyone for that matter) as a permanent record. I did it mostly for my own satisfaction, being semi-retired, and have since got involved on some more (financially) productive work in c#, so there may not be any more Android apps for a while.
