I quit this book.

I'll shelf it for future reference if need be, but it's ridiculously complicated as a starter item.

What's more, he seems to get sidetracked easily throughout the chapters. In the chapter talking about user layout, he goes and talks about how to customize the layout of the ToDoList app, and then goes off on some kinda Compass tangent.

Weak.

Guys - the book is fine. It clearly says "Android 1.0" on the back cover, so don't fault the author...read closer before you purchase the book.

The low/medium/high dpi are new concepts to Android, and were added after the book was written. A simple search through Google documentation will demonstrate how they are used.

The Compass example is not a "tangent". It's covered under its own major heading 'Creating Custom Widgets and Controls'. A necessary discussion for User Interface development.

Sorry, but the book is not well organized and the explanations are not complete. There is a lot of information here, but I have since found other books that are much more clearly written, complete, and useful. This book needs to be worked over by a good editor.
