Default Column Span Problem

Regarding a group header/footer how can a single column expand across all columns? I see no setting for this.

Slect the header column --> Press Shift & select the colums you want to span together(these are the columns to the right of the header column)-->Right click anywhere on the highlighted area --> Merge Cells
