Default Expand/Collapse Data

I have a web site that reads from a database and writes a list of companies to a page, based on criteria entered by the user. If the user finds a company they are interested in, I want them to CLICK on the company so they can see additional information about the company (as opposed to displaying all the information for each company on the page that lists the companies). I am clueless where to start. If someone could tell me what this would be called in ASP I have no problem to research and develop the code myself. However, I do not know what terms or topics to look under to educate myself on this topic. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

You can do it server side, but its probably better to do it client side using javascript, there are plenty of examples if you search on Google, I've got one working at http://www.greggriffiths.org/webdev/links.html

Where you implement this would be based on how much data you have. If you have 100s of companies with lots of information, then you may not want want to send all that data down to the the client. You might choose then, to manage this on the server with ASP.

Managing it on the server will require a round trip to the server, however. This will affect the user experience while they are going through the data. Managing it on the client will slow down the initial page load.

So, do you have (or have the potential for) a lot of companies with tons of information or do you have only a few companies with basic information?

Yes I have the potential of 100s of companies with basic information. My preference is to keep it all ASP, but if that is not the best way to do it I could use JavaScript

If you want a nice smooth expanding treeview type system, you need to do it client side. I'd suggest using DHTML with Javascript for that. There are "treeviews" available on the open-source systems that you can download. I won't repeat that work here.

Here's one place, though I never used it.
