synchronize files in dwmx 2004
hi,
first off, i want to apologize for posting such a lame question, but i can't seem to find the solution and as i have so little time .... i'm going to swallow my pride with the whole world watching.
i'm new to dwmx 2004. in dw3 it was easy to see both local and remote sites on my computer. now i can see my local by opening up the folder from the finder, and the remote inside of dw. the only way i've been able to download files into my local folder is to double click on the remote files because the icons i usually use to download are greyed out.
what i'd like to do is synchronize my files, but the help is NO help. i've tried to do the below, but control click does NOT bring up the promised window.
:::::::::::::::::::
<<<To synchronize your files:
1. In the Files panel (Window > Files), select a select a site from the pop-up menu where the current site, server, or drive appears.
2. (Optional) Select specific files or folders.
If you want to synchronize the entire site, skip this step.
3. Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Macintosh), then select Synchronize from the context menu.
The Synchronize Files dialog box appears.
:::::::::::::::::::
any ideas?
ps: i'll be working my way through the 'Dreamweaver MX: Building on Solid Foundations' pdf book/course through www.projectseven.com next week, but i need to get my site over to my new g5 today. grrrrrrrr

Hi Catherine,
Where do you Ctrl-click to get the menu? You should be able to get the context menu when you ctrl-click on of the files in the Files panel, or by ctrl-clicking the entire site on the Files panel.
You can also (maybe even easier) click the Expand/Collapse button at the right on the toolbar of the Files panel. This will expand the Files panel in a more FTP-like interface where you can sync your site.
Cheers,
Imar

imar,
thanks for replying.
<<Where do you Ctrl-click to get the menu?
where they said, and everywhere else
<<You should be able to get the context menu when you ctrl-click on of the files in the Files panel, or by ctrl-clicking the entire site on the Files panel.
i do get a contextual menu, and it says:
new file
new folder
edit
modify
remote server
refresh
<<You can also (maybe even easier) click the Expand/Collapse button at the right on the toolbar of the Files panel. This will expand the Files panel in a more FTP-like interface where you can sync your site.
nope, i've done that before and all i get is just the one side. not both like i'm used to.

This is really strange. What side do you see when you click the Expand button?
Maybe this behaves different for the Mac. Do they menus on the Expanded files dialog offer you additional options?
How are your local and remote site setup?
Other than that, I can't think of anything that causes this. It behaves as you described on a PC, so maybe it's a Mac thingy.....

when i click the button, it says something about the remote files, but the title says local files.
<<Maybe this behaves different for the Mac. Do they menus on the Expanded files dialog offer you additional options?
not options that point to getting both menus into the same window like t hey should be.
<<How are your local and remote site setup?
not sure how to answer this question, but it very likely could be i mufffed the set-up.
i'll see what i can do about deleting the files on my hd, and starting over. if it'll let me. i tried to do it without deleting and it said i already had that ftp set up. and there is NOTHING in the documentation that i can find. or have found in the past couple of days.
thank-you for responding. i'll come back with the answers, when i get them.

ok, maybe this will clear it up a bit. i remember when i first tried to get my site over to the g5, it came up with an error "And FTP error occured - cannot get remote folder information. DW could not connect to the server. Please check network connection and try again".
so i reread the site info instructions and [i believe] i went with a passive ftp.
this morning i 'hid' the katz folder in order to make a new one in a second attempt. dw created a new one on my desktop though, so i made a new folder [katz site] and started again.
this is what i'm seeing. the difference between the two - http://www.katzidesigns.com/zips/sync.jpg
what i want to do is the one on the right. BUT the one on the right comes up with the previous errors - cannot connect.
[it was SO easy in DW3!]

Hi Catherine,
Did you install the latest service release for Dreamweaver MX 2004? I know they fixed a lot of issues, including FTP troubles.....
Cheers,

Hi Catherine,
Did you check your local library? You might want to do that because they might have some books on using Dreamweaver. Of course, I don't really know of any good ones since I haven't really checked any of the libraries here in Madison, Wisconsin thoroughly.
Anyways, just a thought

ben,
a nice thought, but in brunei we don't have libraries where we can cruise for books on web, or many other subjects for that matter. and not any bookstores either with web books pertinent to what i'm asking.
often i dream of what it'd be like to be able to walk into a complete library and saturate myself. but, cannot, lah.
