differences between dwmx and dwmx2004
all,
i downloaded the pvll foundations mx pdf, and noticed that there are differences as it's written for dwmx, not dwmx2004.
so i was wondering, is there any place on the web where i can download what to expect?
i'm leaving on tuesday for two weeks, and taking everything i can fit on my powerbook to start learning dwmx2004. what i can't download or print out, i won't be able to get to as the internet connections where i'm going are pretty lousy.
any suggestions?
as always, much appreciated,
cat

Hi Catherine,
What do you mean with "what to expect"? Are you looking for a list with new stuff in Dreamweaver MX 2004?
In that case, take a look at the help section of DW. It has a Whatâs new in Dreamweaver MX section with a list of new features.
You can also watch a 5 minute "what's new" movie here:
http://www.macromedia.com/software/dreamweaver/
Also, this "Dummies" article lists the new features:
http://www.dummies.com/WileyCDA/Dumm...e/id-2317.html
The biggest change IMO is the way DW deals with formatting. 2004 is much better in creating and rendering complex CSS layouts (although not perfect, unfortunately. So don't rely on DW alone, but test regularly in a browser)
Other than those changes, you'll find that many things are still the same. It depends a bit on what you're going to do with DW. So, CSS has changed a lot, but many dynamic server-side things like ASP etc are still pretty much the same.
If you have a manual for a plugin for MX, you should be able to use it with 2004 as well. Some things have moved, others things renamed etc, but generally, I think you'll find most stuff at their old location.
And finally, you could take a look at this book of course:
http://www.wrox.com/books/0764555243.shtml ;)
Cheers and have fun in those two weeks,
Imar

imar,
<<Are you looking for a list with new stuff in Dreamweaver MX 2004?
i jumped from dw3 and 4, to dwmx2004 so i have no knowledge of what was on offer in dwmx.
BUT, the book i downloaded to teach dwmx2004 is really for dwmx, mostly for windows. and there is a difference. i know too little about the version to know if it's me messing up, or if it's the upgrade. or both with me being tired. not knowing is frustrating. [being this tired is frustrating.]
<<take a look at the help section of DW
yes, as long as they are clear on what was before. that's my problem. i need something that points out the differences, not just what's new, [i'm being as clear as mud i realize] so i'll know what to interpret from the book.
what i was hoping for was a 'this is what it looked and acted like in dwmx' and 'this is what ....dwmx2004' sort of article. too much to ask for, right?
also, i'm really not liking the dw help. give me a manual any day [third party preferably]
<<Also, this "Dummies" article lists the new features:
this is closer to it. i need something simple as a starter i can print out or copy out to read.
<<And finally, you could take a look at this book of course:
drat drat drat! i sure wish i'd found you before i bought that book from foundations. your book is EXACTLy what i've been looking for. and this forum is where i feel the most comfortable. double drat. :-(
but my team, along with a new addition, have all switched to dwmx except for one, i'll advise them to buy your book.
drat
imar, thanks again for all your help.

Hi again,
I don't know of any article of the type you were hoping for. Usually, you'll see that an article about DW just discusses the changes to the features that are used in the article. I haven't seen a complete list with the *changes* yet....
So, I am afraid you'll need to Google a lot and read. Time consuming, but probably the only way. :-(
You may have already seen this, but here it is anyway:
http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/mx/..._whatsnew.html
I wouldn't worry about the changes too much, though. If you're familiar with previous versions you should be able to work with the MX 2004 version as well. The underlying concepts haven't changed; HTML, CSS, design principles etc are still the same. If you understand these concepts, you'll be up to speed with MX 2004 in no time.
Cheers,
Imar

imar,
thanks, yes i've read [some of] the macromedia stuff.
<<afraid you'll need to Google a lot and read.
not going to happen stuck way out in the boonies in thailand i'm afraid. but if you have confidence, i'll give it a go.
i'll be back in at the end of the month and we'll see just how far i've gotten. or if i've taken the foundations book that i've printed out [all 309 pages] and put it to other use.
thanks again,
cat

Hi Catherine,
Where did you try to order the book? Here at P2P.Wrox.com? If so, I think you should contact the customer care department: http://www.wrox.com/WileyCDA/Section/id-105070.html
They may be able to help you.
Also, can you order the book through Amazon? Do they ship to Brunei?
Cheers,
Imar
