'I had finished the first chapter and installed the iis we server, which was working fine. Now when I installed the Windows 2000 server the things seems to be screwed up. The localhost always wants a username and a password, which I completely have no ida about. I tried to uninstall the windows server, but still the same problem persists

What do you mean with "I installed the Windows 2000 server" On what OS did you install IIS first?

Are you sure that the account that IIS uses (IUSR_MachineName where MachineName is the name of your computer) has access to your Web folder (C:\Inetpub\wwwroot by default)??
