guess it depends on the company your are applying to, when I last went for an interview I was quizzed on a number of subjects ranging from importing and parsing data (csv, mdb, html, xml and a few others I hadn't come across) to broader range questions on the accounting fucntions within excel. My actual vba skills were put to the test with a series of small problems I had to create solutions for.

It really seems to depend on the company you apply to and the current knowledge base there (one of my previous companies questions at the interview consisted of things like, what is the difference beween a sub and a function - anyone could have breezed them).

The brief for the job should give you some ideas as to the areas they are interested in, and usually the brief will also give you an idea about how much they know..

thats kinda hard because everything I do is for a specific task - so for example one of the excel projects was to import data from sage, break it down, spit out the results to a series of seperate spreadsheets, email some HTML generated data to senior managers and then update the intranet with daily summaries.

Specifics are hard to give on a broad ranging subject - it would depend on what sort of data your are retrieving and where the data is being retrieved from.

As for the matrices. Again not really, at the moment I meet with managers who tell me what they want to be able to get from the data and I return them reports that fit that criteria, some of the more IT savvy managers get pivot tables so that they can mess with the data a bit, but the bulk of the analysing is done by code based on predetermined requirements.
