Default Threads open in new window

Would it be difficult to generate the topic links to open in a new window? This setting could be stored in the user's preferences.

Personally, I browse the site by opening an "active topics" window, and opening interesting threads in new windows. Pressing the shift key while clicking a link isn't hard to do or anything, but it'd be convenient not to have to.

Sounds whiney, I know, but hey, that's the root of most feature creep anyway, right?

Take care,

Nik

Oh please no. I already end up with so many P2P windows from my mail box.

If links open in the same window, you have at the least the option to open them in a new window yourself. But if they already open in a new window, there is no way to put them back in the main window.....

If you decide to do so, please make it a preference you can set in your profile.

I agree with Imar on this one....

However, it can't hurt to add the *option* to open links in a new window.

May I (strongly) suggest that this is set to OFF by default:)

I don't think we're going to implement this one.

With the exception of a few confirmation dialogs, the design of the site purposely avoids popup windows. I think it would be more confusing than useful to have some links open new windows while others don't.

Fair enough. Though setting this as an option with the default value to "Same Window" doesn't seem (to me) to add any confusion.

Open threads in new window? ( ) Yes (*) No

I agree with Nik, I think the setting would be helpful.
And if its off by default.. what harm is done?!

I think it makes for easier navigation/multitasking to open a new window each time.

I agree. As long as it is an option you can turn on and off, no harm is done.
Even the default setting wouldn't really matter, as long as the user is told how it works, and how it can be changed (rather like the default on spelling for your posts....)

Uhhh,

I believe you already can open threads in a new window. Just do a right-click on the topic, select Open in new window from the pop-up window and a new window will open up.

Hope this clears up any confusion.

That's what SHIFT-click does.

True,

However, you can also do a right-click and select Open in new window
