Search doubt

hi all,
i have to do search in my project.I have to use search for username.Assume that many users are there in database.for this i need sql query to search username like ' a* '.If i enter in username textfield as ' a* ' and search .It results list of all users has to be displayed ,started letter with a.for this i need sql query.

front end is java.
back end is oracle 9i.

How about posting that in a relevant forum, than posting it in a feedback forum here?

You have not mentioned about what database that you use and no mention about the frontend that you use for the same.
