.net program from web to read registry.

Hi all,

I'm trying to write a web-based program that works something like MS Windows update (au). Preferred to run in the web browser and be able to check the local machine it is surfed on for upgrade keys in registry.

I understand it may be written as an ActiveX control. Where would be a good spot to start?
