Default How to add conditional link to GridView?

I want to add an Edit link in a GridView conditional upon the allowEdit boolean field in my C# codebehind. I tried:

<asp:HyperLinkField

DataNavigateUrlFields="ItemID"

DataNavigateUrlFormatString="editdetail.aspx?id={0 }" Text="Edit" Visible = '<%# Eval("allowEdit") %>' />

but this is approach is incorrect; there is no DataBinding event for this object.

I have a DataSet which I am binding to the GridView. How do I add this column to the DataSet? What is the proper approach to conditionally adding this column?

TIA!

The above question should read, allowEdit *variable* from the codebehind (not field). Either all the rows should have the Edit link, or none.

TIA!
