Default Beginning Programmer to Java - Need help please

Hey guys, I'm a beginning programmer and the language I know right now is C up to linked list(if that gives any help) and I'm still kinda new in the programming world but I had a question about NetBeans because I want to get into the Java programming language.

I used Visual Basic at school to program in C and I was looking for a similar API and upon looking at NetBeans I noticed it was almost the same thing. I could be wrong with that statement though..now to my question.

Is this a good API to begin with? Is there a soo called "better" one for beginners and also any online tutorials for the Java Language that anybody recomends or for Netbeans itself (currently reading the one they offer in NetBeans getting started and also reading the Sun Java tutorial for Java).

Any other suggestions or tips for a beggining programmer would be helpful as well.

Thanks and hope to hear from you guys soon.
