Default New to JAVA

I want to start JAVA, for this I need basic guidance about its Programming Environment.
I am using Visual C++ for OOP, but I want to do same on JAVA... can you please guide me what I need to start JAVA.???
How can I get its compiler? Where should I write its code??? All these steps required to get JAVA on my computer....

References for the best compilers would be great help for me....

Download the jdk software from the sun site
java.sun.com
download the editor from www.jcreator.com
enjoy working with java

I have downloaded JCreator.
Now, If I don't download JDK then????...
It won't work without it...
Can you tell me what is JDK and why it is necessary????

JDK is the one which compiles your java classes. You must have it to compile your java files. I prefer you to go through some fundamentals of Java. If you ask these kind of questions in forums then it might take months for you to just start learning java. Try to follow some books.
