display element (layer) over java applet

it is possible to place any element (layer) above a Java applet ?

I develop menu (DHTML) but it sub group elements is not show over the java applet, it goes behind the java applet,

How can bring to front (any elemment, picture etc) over the
java applet ?

any idea, help please ?
