Hello, thanks for the reply. Well, I am 99.9% sure I posted a message in relation to partitioning in order to install Linux 9. Here it goes again. I have Win2k and have been trying to install Red Hat to do a gradual migration as learn about the latter OS. Linux seems to recognize most of my devices such as modem NIC, Video, etc. It only runs into problems during partitioning. I tried to go with Auto Partion and use existing free partition. Here is what I have. I am using a laptop.

Total Hard disk capacity: 18.142 gigs

Logical drive C: 9.7 gigs ( NTFS ) storing Windows 2000
Logical drive D: 2.2 gig ( NTFS ) storing my personal data
Logical drive E: 4.8 gigs ( FAT32 ) Created specially to store Linux

The installation does not go past the disk partitioning.

Error message:

"Could not allocate partition as primary".

Shows drive as full capcity hda 17296 mb. Beside that description there is an uneditable checkbox. A further checkbox for REVIEW that can be removed.

I then tried the MANUAL partition option. Drive 17296 hda1. Further down the page I get Hard Drives
/dev/hda/

next line

/dev/hda1 ntfs 17297

start 1

end 2205

If highlight /dev/hda1 ntfs 17297 I can click NEXT only to get the same error message.

I tried to delete the partition on E in windows using Computer Management. But for some reason windows would not delete saying "logical disk drive manager service may have become unstable. Please close disk manager snap in and restart system".

I then tried to delete using the 4 windows 2000 set-up disk. I was surprised that unlike what I see normally my hard drive was displayed as "unknown drive". I would usually see all partitions along with an option to delete and re-create.

I can work windows but would rather not have delete all partitions.

Can you help.?

I can backup data wipe everything but would rather try this first.

I am going to try using Partion Magic. Would be grateful for your help.

PS My Windoz OS is stable at this moment.

Regards
