Default php 5 not working with mysql

hi all i m a new php user
i have first installed php 5 and used it for some time
when i had to work wid database then i instaled mysql 4.0.something

but in configration file when i uncommented
;extension=php_msql.dll
then an error comes that unable to load dynamic link library :)
so plz tell me that is there any way to use mysql with php5
and also tell me that what r the difference b/w using php/my sql
and php/mysql
tell me the benefits of both these combinations
ur reply will b highly appreciated...:)
