You can also upgrade the phpMyAdmin yourself. Just download the latest version from
http://www.phpmyadmin.net/.
The set-up is not too tricky, you would only need to modify one script in there which last I checked was called config.inc.php. Be careful though, you would need to turn on HTTP authentication and you would need to modify user, password, auth_type and 'PmaAbsoluteUri' variables some of which appear more than once in the script. The 'PmaAbsoluteUri' is especially important in that it tells phpMyAdmin the absolute URL to itself.
After that just upload the files to your ISP in the same manner with which they appear in the unzipped archive.
Honestly its not too complicated I had a little trial and error getting all the variables set in there. Some of them appear something like four times through the script. A fine alternative if your ISP is unwilling to upgrade on its own.
