Default SQL Server Management Studio

Hello
Can I ask for some assistance in SQL Server management Studio Express.
I am trying to Connect to a server, by putting in the name of the server or computer name, and then I connect, but it gives me this error.
TITLE: Connect to Server
------------------------------

Cannot connect to Stephen.

------------------------------
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2)

I have looked everywhere to resolve this issue. I have enabled remote connections, to the best of my knowledge. Right now I just dont know what I am doing wrong.
Thanks a lot for any help
