Default SQL Server licensing

Hi all

I need to deploy SQL Server as the backend to an IIS/ASP web application and can't make head nor tail of the licensing.

The standard edition appears to come in 5 and 10 cal versions but as this is a backend to ASP code I can't tell how many users I am likely to have. IIS is running in the context of user IUSR_SERVER1 ie only one user is connecting to the database.

Am I able to use the 5 cal version legally in this case?
£1500 sounds a lot better than £14000 for the full enterprise edition.

Appreciate any comments.

Regards
Graham

You would need to check with MSFT licencing about that- but I belive that if you only have the IUSER_ connecting then it's one user.. and it's not the number of users using the web site.

But I feel it will not be considered as single connection. When I do a query based on table1, and you do a query based on table2, then it is considered as 2 concurrent connections. So that does have an effect with the licensing, though the user is IUSR_xxx. Still got to check with MS licensing.

I just came across this document yesterday: http://www.microsoft.com/sql/techinf...ng/ChoosEd.doc

It is kind of old, but may still help you. I was recalling something from it that I thought would be a problem for you, but I recalled it wrong:

"SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition and SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition are the only editions of SQL Server 2000 that can be installed and used in live (deployed) server environments."

So you can use standard edition and you just need to work out the licensing details.
