Default Sql server deadlocks and RAID

Hi,
we are having severe performance issues with sql server 2000. the hardware configuration is 4 x 1.4 Ghz P4 procs with 4 GB RAM (Dell poweredge server) with RAID 5 on a 260 GB usable HD. The database size is only 60 GB and when we run the aspx app (from a different server), performance is sporadically sluggish and deadlocks happen. I have heard about RAID 5 affecting performance by adding hardware latency but this case is too bad. HELP PLEASE...
Any thoughts on how to reduce the latency or increase response times would be much appreciated.
Thanks
