Default SQL Server Version Help!

I am just getting into SQL server and truly don't know what version I need for my unique situation. Here are the details:

The company I am working for manages about 25 sites online - about half of them using databases and only a couple doing large amounts of transactions. All the sites however are hosted using a web host that can incorporate SQL Server 2000. However, I am unaware of which version of SQL I need to connect to these online sites to manage the databases, make live changes, create reports, or even mirror the databases that are online with this hosting company to my local machine.

Can any help with figuring out this mess?
