I have done this before using client access ODBC driver, it's quite sensitive to the different options in the DSN but it can be done.
You say you're using a file DSN? In the 'ODBC Data Sources' dialog, 'configure' the DSN and take a look at the options on the 'General' tab. Right next to the 'System' drop-down you'll see a 'Connection Options' button - click it and you'll get another dialog to set the default user name. You probably have the 'use Windows user name' option selected. I always use the 'Use the user ID specified below' option and put my AS/400 logon in there.
