Default out of the office connection

Hi All,,

One of my colleagues has a SQL server running on his server (connected on the internet) I want to connect this SQL server without any luck !!
Are there special settings we need to do?,

Can you access his computer generally on the network?

I can Ping the server, also can use the ftp server installed using the proper userid & pw,...
I thought maybe we must do something on the SQL server ???
