Default Strange 2K Installation Problem

I have a new machine HP Compaq nx8220 running XP Pro. I am getting the following prompt during installation of SQL Server 2000 (Developer edition):

"A previous program installation created pending file operations on the installation machine. You must restart the computer before running set up."

This prompt occurs:
1..click 'autoRun.exe'
2..click 'SQL Server 2000 Components'
3..click 'Instal Database Server'
4..Click 'Next' to the screen that says "installation wizard allows you to......."
5..check the radio button 'Install on local machine' (yes the machine name is inside the text area above, it is grayed out and is the correct machine name) and click 'Next'
This is where the error (prompt) occurs.

I have installed SQL Server on many machines. have tested this disk on another machine which installs without issue. The disk is not faulty. this machine is brand new. homesite, photoshop, SQL Yog ETC.. installs without issue. I have an administrative account, it is not a permissions thing.

Frankly I do not know what to do. has anybody seen this error before and can advise me??

TYIA

I am not sure that thats his issue...

I think your issue is the version of the operating system vs the "server" software. Newer Operating systems won't allow you to install server versions of software on them. I think if you were not running XP, and were running NT, 2000, or 2003 you would see the next button. But since your os version is not "intended" (in other words blocked by MS) for running "server" software you don't get to install it. Either move back a version on your OS or move to a server version of your OS and I think you should be fine. I think you can install it on win 2000 desktop or server version, NT (any version) but not on XP. After win 2000 they require a "server" version of the OS.

Just my thoughts, I don't run any version of XP on anything!!!

robprell

interesting input. Did you notice I posted the initial problem and the solution?

Your post is incorrect. FYI: SQL Server does run on XP pro, why do you think it has Internet Information Server?

For others reading this post the solution works, is a problem known to MS, is a registry hack and a harmless one at that.
