Hi all !

I’ve just installed sql server 2000, and want to work on my pc, as a database server,

In the enterprise manager I, I choose the option :

- new sql server registration (under Microsoft sql srvers)



then in the register sql server wizard, I choose my machine’s name as a server,

in the end of the wizard session I’ve got the message :





(*) <machine’s name..> -SQL server does not exist or access denied. Connectionopen (Connect)



I used windows authentication as login.

I really don’t know what to do and why sql server 2000 don’t know how to recognize my computer as a server



If I’ll try to access the properties of the new server I’ll get the next message:

The server \\. Is not known to be running, Are you sure you wish to connect ?

(and while writing yes I’m getting (*) again…)

Use "(local)" as your server name. Also this is a forum for sql2005

Hi Pitter,

first check what sql server edition u have installed.
enterprise edition can be installed on windows 2000 server, data center, 2003 only.
now It depends what configuration u have chosen when installing sql server.

SQL type: default, named instance if named then what is the name of instance.
becoz if named instance is chosen then u have to give the sql server name as <computername>\<instance name> otherwise use ur computer name as instance name or (local).

what type of authentication u have chosen
Authentication 1. Windows Authentication 2. sql server authenication
if sql server authentication then at the time of sql server registration u will have chose the same.

if it doesn't solve your problem then check to see whether the sql server service(ms sql server) is running.

u can see it by start->control panel->administrative tools->services
if it is stopped then start it.
