backup of database

i am in deep unknown trouble
i took backup of my databse. then i detach database and deleted mdf and ldf files as size of ldf file was 24GB. my troble starts. i created a new database in sql and try to restore database. it is showing size of database as 30 g and restore fails as sql require nearly 30 GB free space.
i did this process so many times but i neve detach database but always delete. how can i solve my problem now.
