 I am generating a word document and I want to be able to check and see if someone else has the document open already. Is there any code that does this.

You could use GetObject ("Word.Application") method...
It returns a handle of Word Application, if the word is running
then you will receive a handle and can access its documents. If Word isn't running you sould receive... 429 error
