Reading bitmap as slices

hi all,
I need to read a bitmap image in terms of slices. By slices i mean either the top half part,bottom half part,left half or right half parts. If i use the fread procedure i wud be allowed for sequential access of all four quadrants even if i dont need two of them. Please help!!
