How do I get the name?

this is not work: /*name()

or if I in a middle of something else like for-each.

<xsl:for-each select="/path/to/something">
   <xsl:value-of select="name()"/>
</xsl:for-each>

will give something.

How do I get the name of the "root" node?

As has been repeated said you can't, it has no name. You want the name of the root element.

You really need to do a little research on XSLT such as context node and relative versus absolute paths.
