Default SQL Server Help

Hi All,

I'm trying to install the Sql Server on a stand alone desktop and it keeps asking me for an strong SAPassword. Does anyone know where I go to set this up? I'm running XP, if that makes a difference and I'm the only user. I've tried setting the password on the administrator user, but that didn't help. Do I need to restart, before that takes effect?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Kevin

It wants a strong system administrator password. For my home SQL Server I have a blank password on the SA account. It is not required, but SQL just posts that warning and then a follow up warning. Ignore it if you don't need security.

The problem is, when trying to install, it's forcing it. If it doesn't have it, it gives me a box, saying "Need it, setup exiting".

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Kevin

Sorry, you also need to use the enterprise manager to set the SA password.
Go into your server through the manager, then Under Security, then Logins, and doubel-click the sa account. Then type in the password in the Password text box on the first tab. It should open right to it with the old password highlighted and ready to write over.
When you installed SQL Server you should have installed the tools.

Just type in a password that is 8 or more characters, and has numbers and letters.

Michael,

There in lies the rub. I'm on a stand alone PC running XP. I'm trying to load the server. I'm basically starting from scratch.

When you said I should have installed the tools, I'm trying to load the server and the tools.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Kevin

I don't think you can install SQL Server 2000 on Windows XP Pro or on certain desktops. I recently tried to do this and couldn't.

Michael,

I think that's the problem then. I wanted to test upsizing a database, but oh well.

Thanks for all your help, anyway!

You'll have to get a seperate machine and run Windows Server on it, then install SQL Server on that. Then install the enterprise manager tools on your desktop and connect from your desktop. You can also connect locally using enterprise manager tools, but that is usually not done since dba's usually manage more than one server in more than one physical location. This is how I do it at home. The server is on a wireless network, too. Pretty cool.

Michael,

I'll have to do that after I install at the client site.

Thanks for all your help!
