Default Stable Version of VWD

Every time I drop a sqldatasouce or gridview into design view the program locks and say it is producing and error report and closes. Does anyone know where I can get a stable version of VWD, suggest another application or know when VWD will be more stable. So far I love “Beginning ASP.NET 2.0 Databases” I just need VWD to stop crashing.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks!
Rich

Hi. I would suggest uninstalling and reinstalling Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Beta. With the Beta 1 release, I have not had any problems with the application crashing. I also have not had any problems with Visual Basic 2005 Express. The only thing I've noticed so far is that the DataGrid is not listed in the tool box. I tried using the DataView, but was unsucessful at what I needed (the DataGrid works better for me). Try typing in the control name in code from the HTML Source and see if it crashes when you do that. After you add the control in code, you can go back to the design editor and edit the properties that way. I did it with the DataGrid :D

Thanks! I've installed and uninstalled VWD, sqlexpress and msde sample dbs 3 diffrent times with the crashing occuring everytime. I'm on a Dell 4600 XP Pro 256 mgs ram.

Any installation suggestions? I download the file from here http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/express/vwd/ and select all option except the J language thing which I understand I don't need.

You don't need the J# language unless you want to write your code in J#. I did not do anything special when i installed it, just ran the installation program and it installed. Granted, I have no tried to add a SQL DataSource to my program (i write all my database functionality in code). You may want to try doing that? For example, here's part of my code for adding something to a drop down list control:

'Sub procedure to Load the ATM Drop Down List
Dim cnATM As New SqlConnection("server=<server name>; database=<db name>; trusted_connection=true;")
Dim daATM As New SqlDataAdapter("SELECT CICS_ID FROM ATM", cnATM)
Dim dsATM As New DataSet

daATM.Fill(dsATM) 'Fill the DataSet
ddlATM.Items.Clear() 'Clear the items
ddlATM.DataSource = dsATM 'Set the Drop Down List's DataSource
ddlATM.DataValueField = "CICS_ID" 'Set the Drop Down List's DataValue Field
ddlATM.DataBind() 'Bind the Drop Down List
dsATM.Dispose() 'Dispose of the DataSet
daATM.Dispose() 'Dispose of the DataAdapter
If cnATM.State = ConnectionState.Open Then cnATM.Close() 'Close the connection if it is open

Thats all it takes to bind a column from a SQL database to a drop down list. Try doing that and let us know if it is still crashing. But remember, it's still in the Beta stage, so there might be a issue with the application and your system that is making it crash.

Thank you very much. I seem to be going from one issue to another here. Now VWD does not want to see SQLExpress. Says I'm the wrong user. I'm loged in as the same one the installed the app.
