i am intrested in sms applications not just ordinary telephone modem applications. the pc will read incoming sms from a mobile phone/gsm modem and then do some processing(kind of validation) and then call a class do the other things(like storing the sms read into a database.
then what kind of mobile phones can i use to achieve this task

I think you cant use mobile phones to do this. you can use GSM Modem's to achieve this . Using GSM Modem's you can send and receive SMSs from PC.
