I am not talking about database queries, but about ASP.NET query strings.That's how ASP.NET keeps track of "the originally requested URL".

The FormsAuthentication.RedirectFromLoginPage takes 3 arguments not 2
No it does not. It *also* supports one that takes three arguments, but also one that supports two.

should allow me to carry on as usual. It keeps me on the login page.
Like I said: it works for me, and takes me to Default.aspx, so something must be wrong with your code, or with the query string.
