If you want to get a job as a linux systems administrator, then getting RHCE is probably a useful thing to put on a resume. If you want to be a programmer, then getting a Red Hat certification isn't as important.

Regardless, the lessons you learn in the RHCE course will likely be applicable to most linux/unix distributions.

In case you're curious, I have not taken any sort of IT-level certification classes or tests (e.g. RHCE, Cisco, MSCE, etc.), nor does my career as a software developer really require me to.
