That's a good point, but many people also explicitly DON'T like Red Hat because it's RPM package install system sometimes gets a little tweaked. I've been in situations where I've tried to install things where the package dependency tree was complicated and wouldn't ever install properly. Alternatively, I was able to simply download the latest versions of all the things I knew I needed, and simply

./configure
make
make install

for each package and voila -- it all worked.

Take care,

Nik

I think it's perfectly reasonable.

i agree that rpm dependencies can be a pain, but the benefit of the rpm system is that you can get yum, apt-get, or autorpm (or ...etc) to automatically update packages for you. this is great when the latest exploit comes out and your sendmail is automatically upgraded. You can also just force the rpm install... I guess the problem is that the rpm is pre-compiled, and expects certain versions of gcc, perl, pam, or a host of other programs to be installed of the same version number... mind you you can always get the source code for the rpm and just compile it yourself. I personally like using an rpm system for standard components (so they can be automatically updated, as I expect exploits for linux to be realized a little bit more in the next few years) and for special one-offs or special task programs I don't mind compiling or maybe adjusting the source code if need be.
