Hi there,

Did you change anything to your machine or its configuration? I thought you had everything up and running in June??

I am having a similar problem. See description as follows:
When I try to run any of the examples from Visual Web Developer 2005 Express, I get the following error:

"The connection name 'LocalSqlServer' was not found in the applications configuration or the connection string is empty."

If I try to run the application from my default web in IIS with Virtual Directory assigned , I get the following error:

"Server Application Unavailable
The web application you are attempting to access on this web server is currently unavailable. Please hit the "Refresh" button in your web browser to retry your request."

The event log recorded the following:

"Failed to execute the request because the ASP.NET process identity does not have read permissions to the global assembly cache. Error: 0x80070005 Access is denied."

"aspnet_wp.exe (PID:4704) stopped unexpectedly."

Hi Rich,

Did you change anything to the configuration of your system? How did you install your machine? What versions of .NET do you have running and in what order did you install them?

And did you search Google for the error message? Searching for the exact string "Failed to execute the request because the ASP.NET process identity does not have read permissions to the global assembly cache" brings up some useful results.

Cheers,

Imar

Imar,

I have .net versions 1.1. and 2.0 installed 1.1 first. I installed Web Developer Express and then SQL 2005 express. The defualt web has frontpage server extensins 2002 installed.

I did do a google search but results do not resolve my problem. What makes ASP.Net 2.0 so baffling is it is being marketed by MS and in books as solution that is simpler and more stable than asp yet I can not seem to get on first base so to speak.

Did you try reconfiguring ASP.NET 2??

1. Open a command prompt
2. Stop IIS: iisreset /stop
3. Change to the .NET Framework 2.0 root directory: C:\winnt\Microsoft.Net\Framework\v2.0.50727\
4. Reinstall ASP.NET 2.0 by using the following command: aspnet_regiis -i command.
5. Start IIS again after it has been run: iisreset /start

Also, is your website configured to run under ASP.NET 2 (on the ASP.NET tab in the IIS properties??)

Imar,

I successfuly followed all the steps you suggested and confimed that ASP.Net 2.xx was active on the iis Tab. However, when I browse the ASP.NET page in iis I still get the following error:

Server Application Unavailable
The web application you are attempting to access on this web server is currently unavailable. Please hit the "Refresh" button in your web browser to retry your request.

Administrator Note: An error message detailing the cause of this specific request failure can be found in the application event log of the web server. Please review this log entry to discover what caused this error to occur.

Event Log:
Failed to execute the request because the ASP.NET process identity does not have read permissions to the global assembly cache. Error: 0x80070005 Access is denied.

aspnet_wp.exe (PID: 3808) stopped unexpectedly.

Hmmm, in that case, I don't know what to suggest, other then reinstall IIS and .NET (that is, if you also looked at the top 10 results for the query I suggested and none of it worked):

1. Uninstall .NET 2
2. Uninstall IIS
3. Reboot
4. Install IIS
5. Install .NET

It's a pretty heavy solution, but hopefully it solves your problems.

Ok, before I do the complete uninstall and then reinstall, I had managed to get past one error and now I am getting a new one as follows:

Configuration Error

Do you have solution for this one. A google search does not lead to anything that makes sense to me. Please I am using VWD on a Windows XP local machine. It is not a server. It just doesn't make sense that I would have to modify the machine.config file. Why can't make the neccessary changes to the web.config in the root directory of the virtual web?

I agree with that. Normally, there's no need to modify the machine.config.

The idea is that the machine.config contains a lot of base settings, some of which can be overridden by other web.config files. The LocalSqlServer connection string is used by many of the provider based ASP.NET services. If your machine.config does not have this connection string setting (anymore), things will break.

Did you change anything to the configuration of your system or to the Survey Engine site? Can you run other sites fine? What happens when you create a new web site with just an <asp:Login> control and try to log in??
