Nice job on the book and the sample web site. Very helpful.

I thought you would want to know--the Welcome Box and the paragraph below it are shown twice in my browser. They are captioned Welcome Box [2] and Welcome Box [1] (in that order).

You should be able to log in as an administrator, and then modify the web part layout. The trick: change the context to edit the shared view first.
