Hi,

Just ordered the book from Amazon. Looking forward to getting it. I read the first couple chapters in the book store today.

I have a question about the different versions of Visual Studio. Through my company's msdn account, I have access to any of the versions. I've downloaded both the VWD Express and the full blown Visual Studio Pro but haven't installed either yet.

If I were to install Pro, am I going to be confused at all working through the book? Does Pro give you the options for installing Cassini & SQL Server Express or are those only available with VWD Express? (I'd rather not deal with the security issues of IIS right now and really don't want to have to worry about configuring a full blown version of SQL Server.)

I guess I'm just trying to figure out the advantages/disadvantages of going with either Express or Pro.

The full Visual Studio 2005 install gives you many more options and I think that both Cassini and SQL Express are defaults. The install routine is different though, so won't match the book, but as long as you install the web parts (Visual Web Developer is one of the options) you should be OK. I'll be installing on my laptop tomorrow, so I'll make a note of anything you need to know.

The reason I haven't got back to you about this is that I can't install any of the new versions (VWD, VS or SQL) on my work machine - all of the installations fail, with little in the way of help as to why. From memory though, I'm sure that both Cassini and SQL Express are installed, as long as you select the Web Development option (which is I think, a default selection). I'll confirm it all once I actually get this problem of mine fixed.

Sorry to hear you're having so many problems. I went ahead and installed VS Pro. Figured I could always uninstall it if necessary. Everything went fine for me. Both Cassini and SQL Express were installed. SQL Express was an option, but Cassini just happened automatically.

Great, glad it's working as expected.

My problem is very weird and the log files aren't much help. It installed fine on my laptop, so there's something dodgy with this other machine.
