SQL Database .mdf standalone ?

Hello,

There is something i don't understand.. what is the main difference between an .mdf file and SQL Server Express 2008 ? I alway though it was needed to use SQL Server Express 2008 in order to use a database.. but in your book look like you can use only an .mdf file and open it up in VWD ? Does this mean that you can actually put that in the App Folder and call it to write and manage data ? then when do you need SQL Server Express 2008 ? It is for remote purpose only ? security ?

Hi Rushino,

It looks as if you can just open the MDF file. However, under the hood, Visual Studio connects to SQL Server Express and attaches the database on the fly. So, you still need SQL Server Express, even though VS gives you the impression it's handling all interaction with the database for you.

Thanks i didn't know.. so the fact that its a standalone file mean its good for backup purpose only ?

Not necessarily. When the database is in use, it still can't be backed up using a copy operation.

The main benefit I see is that you don't need to attach it to SQL Server first, which lowers configuration and security requirements.
