Default Connecting to project MDF SQL Database File

Hi there. I am new to this forum and to .Net. I would like to find out why I can't create a crystal report with its datasource as my local project database file. When I get to the "choose datasource" step, I cant connect to my .mdf file. Do crystal reports always have to get their data from a server database with username and password authenticaton? Is there a way I can connect to it?
