Default Cannot install SSMSE 2008 Win 7 64 bit

When ever I try to install SSMSE, I get a message that it is not compatible with my version of Widows and gives me the option to let it find a solution. It finds a solution but it is not SSMSE.
I get SQL Server 2008, which has configuration tools, but I find nothing in there that even refers to SSMSE.

I've been looking for it for days. Does anyone have the right link so I download SSMSE 200

Thanks Chet

Hi there,

You can download SSMS Express 2008 R2 from this Microsoft.com page: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl....aspx?id=22985

Cheers,

Imar

Still no SSMSE I have SQL Server 2005, 2008, and 2008 R2
installed. No errors, and still, 2005 is the only one that
has SSMSE. The others have:
Configuration Tools
__SQL configuration Manager
__SQL Server Error and usage report
__SQL Server Installation Center (64 bit)
and none of the above present the screen that SSMSE 2005 displays.
I am missing a step somewhere.
I am able to get around some using the "Configuration Manager", but it does
not follow the steps in the book and I do get hung up.
.
I want to say I appreciate your help and think the book is great.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

Chet

Hi Chet,

When you run the installer that I linked to, what options do you get? Do you see (and enabled) an item called Basic Tools or something like that?

I decided to uninstall all of the SQL programs, then re-install. I
discovered the SSMSE was installed. I searched and found it and
executed it. It turns out that it presents the setup completely
different than the 2005 version. A whole menu of options I am unfamiliar with.

I realize that this is beyond what I should expect as help, but
wondering if your book on 4.5 is using this new SSMSE presentation?

Now, understand I don't know what I'm looking at, I could be entirely
wrong on my assessment. Please correct me if I've got it wrong.
I don't understand why I don't get the version you present in your book.

Thanks
Chet

Hi Chet,

Which version did you install? What do you see in Help | About? And which menu items do you have that you don't recognize?

Maybe you installed SSMS 2012? That looks a bit like Visual Studio 2010. Howver, most of the UI (menus, toolbars, the various sql panes and the table designer) should all more or less look the same.

In my 4.5 book, I cover SSMS 2012.

Cheers,

Imar

I just realized it's the installer, not SSMS you may have problems with. Attached are a few screenshots of the install process of SQL Server 2012 Express with the tools. It's pretty much Next Next Finish on a clean machine, but things may be slightly different if you already have another version of Express running.

Hope this helps,

Imar

You right Imar. The screen shots look like what I'm getting for 2008. However, what happens is, when I select the link you suggested, I get a screen that say's it has a compatibility issue with my operating system, and gives me a choice to run or let it find the solution. No matter which I choose, it gets redirected to a link that downloads those same looking screens but it is say's it downloading 2008. Now, I will try and remove the installer and see if the download will not re-direct. Is there a way to by-pass the installer without removing it? I would have displayed the screenshot here but having trouble figuring out how.. :) Thanks a ton Imar. Your appreciated.

Viola..... It is a little confusing to say the least. I got it (SSMSE 2008) installed.
I started all over, removed everything that SQL in the name.

I searched and found a link: "Installing SQL Server Management Studio Express 2008".
See Link 1.

Link 1) http://www.asql.biz/Articoli/SQLX08/Art3_1.aspx .

It turns out that you first intall SQL Server 2008, then run the sql download again,
only this time you need to follow instructions in Link 1
.
Now if you get held up with it wanting you to provide a file named "sqlncli.msi" (see link 2)
you need to go to the "control panel" , "remove programs " and uninstall the "SQL Native Client" and re-run the download again.

Link 2) http://n3ilb.wordpress.com/2008/08/0...l-sql-express/

I hope this helps someone out. I spent hours searching and resolving this issue for me. Some would have been much faster, but it did not come easy for me. Now I will get on with Imar's great book.

Chet

Interesting, and quite a trip to make it work ;-)

I was going to reply by asking if you were able to continue with the installation process nonetheless. What I recall from install 2008 on Windows 7 is that it's incompatible, but that it still installs. However, before you can use it you need to apply the latest service pack first.

Anyway, glad to hear it's working now. Did you also install the database engine with a name of SqlExpress? You need that as well to follow along with the exercises.

Cheers,

Imar
