php 5.3
As of PHP 5.3, they don't distribute php.ini with default values (so you won't be able to find those two files that were mentioned in the book). If something does not work for you, let me know, and I can tell you how to adjust your php.ini file.

Let's get to the bottom of this. More information needed in order to help you:
1) What is not working? Do you get any error? if so, What's the exact error?
2) Your sample code that's not working
3) The http.conf file. It's under your httpd/conf directory.
4) The php.ini. Under your php folder.

Setup for Php, MySQL, etc using XAMPP
Hi - I just had a course in this and used the link below which was a totally painless install and config.
I just looked in my book to confirm ...
go to the website ...
http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.html
under download click on XAMPP and download it. It does everything you will need in one shot. Under the column heading The Installation there are web pages that show you what to do in case you would like to see the step by step instructions. DO the practice examples they have in there to give you a feel of how to move around in the shell.
I will also check back to see if you are ok. I am also a student but have been an IT Manager for many years and JUST had this course a few months ago and had to do the same thing. I am not an expert at PHP but helped about 10 classmates install their software so thought I would respond. :)
Hope you are ok!
Ann

Talking about installation, XAMPP is certainly easier.

PHp 5.3.1 Installation
PeterpeiGuo and AnninCt, Thanks very much. I just downloaded to XAMP. Before I wanted to follow the way it was explained in the textbook but Upon downloading this ZIP File : php-5.3.2-Win32-VC6-x86.zip I couldn't get the php. ini - dist and php. ini- recommended what I got was php. ini - development and php.ini -production. But I have finally settled for XAMP. Thanks very much once again I'm very greatful.
Yours,
Sunday
