Cool Next step?

Could anyone suggest a companion to Mr. Horton's informative book? I'm looking for something that may take the initial information provided for the C++ language and suggest programming projects to further my knowledge on how to increase my understanding and skill. I'm am reading this as a self teaching exercise and would appreciate any advice from more experienced programmers. My primary interest at this point is more familiarity with the concepts of C++ from the command line and not through Windows.

If you do not like Windows.

You can use GCC in Linux.

And there are so many books about C++ on Amazon.
