If you are running XP Pro shouldnt the security be there by default?
enable simple file sharing - I dont think this is its purpose. Myn is ticked and I can see the security tab on a directorys properties.
Are you checking these properties with your file explorer (not IIS)? Do it this way

Glad you got it sorted - Did un-ticking this item make the security tab appear? very strange...

"out of the box" xp Pro sp2 does not show security tab in explorer folder/file properties. And it is a direct result of "use simple file sharing" being checked. Unchecking allows you access to the security tab where you can manage group permissions to files/folders

I don't understand why XP Pro SP2 doesn't have the security tab active as default. I was going crazy trying to get this working because I couldn't see the security settings in the tab. In the future, I'll know exactly were to go to make the security tab available.
BTW, does anyone here know who to use the DTS wizard in MS SQL to connect to Oracle 8i?
Thanks All.

Thing is it does. This box is checked on my machine and the security tab is there. I have checked this on three XP pro machines, they are the same. Is this pointless me giving my time to this post, since my questions are giong un-answered I assume so...

mat,
Im not sure of and answer to your question if you are directing that statement to me. The reason I knew about his problem with the security tab is that at my work we develop a client side app that requires "everyone" to have "full control" in a certain directory.
a very common error statement always prompts us to walk the user through unchecking that checkbox to gain access to the security tab and add the everyone group....we do this 5-10 times a week for customers.
I would guess that the computers you are testing this on are part of a domain. I think (am not sure) the security tab is always available to power users/admins in a domain environment.

mat I googled your answer:
"Note that in a domain environment, the Security tab is visible when logging onto XP Professional workstations joined to the domain. If you want to hide it from users, you can do so using a Group Policy Object. Here's how you would create a new GPO that would prevent users from viewing the Security tab for all file systems:"

All my objective here was not to give users the impression this tab was not visible 'out of the box'
If you are on a domain that has a policy not to show this tab; I can not see these type of users being able to make it appear by unchecking any box. A restricted who has had the security tab removed should not be able to make it apear, this would make a bit of a joke of the group policy.
Constructively - These comments I felt neccessary to remove what I consider an incorrect message to others.

i dont consider belonging to a domain environment "out of the box"
..if you read the article linked you'll see that by default "in a domain environment" this tab will be accessible. The thread starter did not have access to this tab. I simply instructed him on how to gain access to it. A single wkstn xp pro "out of the box" install will not have this tab accessible.

I never said you did.
All of my XP pro machine 'out of the box installations' have this tab visible - never have I had trouble seeing it, nor has anybody in my office. A very strange post this is, I guess I will agree to disagree.
I imagine it would be tough to develop ASP pages, administer IIS and the like in a restricted domain environment. When someone asks developer questions here I assume they are not in this pigion hole. Client related questions, yes sure anything is possible.
Anyhow, have a fine day...
