Default [ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]

Hi,

I am fairly new to SQL Server, and am encountering a problem. From searching multiple forums, and the Microsoft database, I am still not able to remotely connect to the server. The error message that I am primarily receiving is: [ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

Server PC is a Win XP Pro SP2 Desktop, P3, 533, 576MB Ram. This is behind a firewall. The Enterprise Manager is detecting it as version 8.0

The Client PC is a Win XP Pro SP2 IBM R51 Laptop, Celeron 1.4M, 256MB Ram, running the same version of SQL Server. The laptop is a direct connection to the Internet

What I am trying to do is connect through a VPN tunnel to connect and access a database.

I have checked all router settings, and have confirmed that both Computers can ping each other. I have also placed the desktop into DMZ to ensure that it is not a port issue (found many links to ensure port 1433, 1434 are opened).

I have also checked to ensure that the computers are both in the same work group, and they can see each other in Network Connections.

Also tried modifying/creating accounts, no passwords, so it is practically like a LAN at this point, but not able to access the server.

Errors received as of yet include error 17, in reference to (been a long night) 08001, and following Microsoft instruction, ended in same result. This lead me to verifying the ports being used and have ensure that both TCP/IP is enabled and that Multiprotocol are enabled (from Server and client network Utilities). The computers registry also looks correct, in reference to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\ Client\ConnectTo\DSQUERY however, according to some posts, it is suggested that you delete this line.

Any assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated and I apologize for the long post.

Dan

Have you check issues with SQL server and xp2,
also check you have installed the latest version of MDAC on server and client.
