You must install "real" versions of SQL Server only on Windows Servers... cannot be installed on a mere desktop. Only the Developer's editions can be installed on desktop boxes. If you get caught using the Developer's Edition as a production DB, the fines are very, very steep.

I have Sql 2000 developer's edition, and the desktop's OS is Windows Xp professional. i heard that the problem may be caused by a firewall or an antivirus software, something related to the security probably, but i'm not sure

You are correct... the SQL Server 2000 Developer's Edition and Windows XP Professional should play just fine together... they do on my desktop.

You're also correct that you should turn off all firewalls and antivirus software and be logged in as the local system administrator all while you are disconnected from the internet to do the install. Of course, don't forget to turn it all back on after the install.
