Default Very frustrated: Dialog

I am very frustrated. The issue must be my version of Android Studio. I followed the book exactly in chapter 3, Understanding Activities. Made all the changes to a base build and have only had issues.
Failed to locate 'com.android.support:design:23.3.0' so build fails.
Most of the Overrides in the JAVA do not override the super class function/method.

Finally opened the example code and it builds and executes as expected. SO, I did a Beyond Compare of my Dialog directory to the example Dialog directory. So many changes that weren't covered in the book.

Any idea what the base project was that the book selected?

I found the issue. The book does not cover the entire Android build. They create a class "R" that has no place in the book. Very poor from a beginner looking to create a whole project.

Exclamation Having the exact same issue

From what I'm reading through this forum, the code examples that are provided in the book are not complete. I tried downloading the example code and opening that as a project and it still gave me tons of errors. Once I got past all the gradle dependency issues and sdk tool version compatibility errors, all references for my imports, and "R", all give the error that the symbol cannot be resolved.

Very hard to learn when example are missing information and not straight forward.

Sorry this isn't an answer just a bump in the thread because no one seems to have the full answer on how to complete these examples.
